A Beginner’s Guide to CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most popular cannabinoids in the United States, as it offers several potential benefits and won’t make you feel high. Whether you’re looking for a new cannabinoid to help you fall asleep or one that will boost your mood throughout the day, you might want to give CBD a shot. While you decide if you want to try CBD, learn more about what it is and some essential information you’ll need to know before you make a purchase.

What Is CBD?

CBD refers to a naturally occurring, non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp plants. While it’s only one of around 200 compounds found in the cannabis plant, it’s the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis, meaning it’s found in large quantities in the plant. Typically, CBD is manufactured in a lab or derived from hemp plants before being incorporated into CBD products.

Will CBD Get You High?

CBD is not psychoactive and will not get you high. Though it can come from the cannabis plant, CBD is isolated from its psychoactive compounds that would make you feel high. While some people feel more relaxed or in a better mood after taking CBD, this cannabinoid won’t impair your ability to function. The World Health Organization has also stated that CBD doesn’t provide effects that would cause harm or be indicative of abuse potential

Keep in mind that some CBD products have a tiny amount of THC in them. For example, full-spectrum CBD will feature a tiny amount of THC, but it won’t get you high. If you want to only take CBD that doesn’t have any detectable THC, you’ll want to go with broad-spectrum CBD.

What Are the Potential Benefits of CBD?

While CBD is still being researched, several studies have found evidence that CBD can be beneficial in several different ways. If you’re considering trying it, find out more about some of the potential effects and benefits of taking CBD below:

Is CBD Legal in North Carolina?

The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp products on a federal level, opening the door for non-psychoactive and psychoactive hemp-based products. Since CBD occurs naturally in hemp, it’s legal to sell on a federal level. It’s also legal in 50 states, but restrictions can vary based on the state, so you’ll always want to check your state’s laws to verify a CBD product is legal to purchase. As of August 2023, CBD is legal in North Carolina as long as it’s derived from hemp and contains less than 0.3% THC on a dry-weight basis.

Due to the legality of some psychoactive cannabinoids like Delta 8 or THCP, you can also often find CBD products featuring psychoactive cannabinoids. For example, a CBD blend with D8 could get you high, so you’ll want to always check the product’s ingredients before you make a purchase. If you do want to purchase a psychoactive CBD blend, make sure the psychoactive cannabinoid is legal in your state.
