Guide to CBN: Everything You Need to Know

Cannabinol (CBN) is quickly becoming a favorite among people interested in its potential benefits for pain management, muscle relaxation, appetite stimulation, and sleep. While research into CBN has a long way to go, some research does point to its possible beneficial properties. Before you try this cannabinoid, take a moment to learn more about what we currently know about CBN and its potential effects.

What Is CBN?

CBN refers to a minor cannabinoid naturally found in cannabis and hemp plants. Typically, CBN forms in cannabis or hemp plants when exposed to air, light, and heat for extended periods. As a result, CBN only occurs in small amounts in young cannabis plants, and it reaches its highest concentrations in aged and dried cannabis plants.

Can CBN Get You High?

While CBN’s potency is only about a 1/4th of Delta 9 THC, it’s still minimally psychoactive. Unlike CBD, CBN can make you feel high, but you shouldn’t expect it to give you as strong of a high as standard marijuana or even Delta 8. Since CBN is only minimally psychoactive, you’d likely have to take a very large dose to feel a mild high.

Due to its minimal psychoactive properties, people often take it like CBD to potentially assist with sleep or for other possible health benefits. Though CBN is only minimally psychoactive, we wouldn’t recommend taking it during the day when you have to drive or work, as it may make you feel drowsy.

CBD vs. CBN: How Is CBN Different From CBD?

Due to CBN’s name, some people can confuse it with CBD. While both are cannabinoids found in cannabis plants, CBD is found in much higher concentrations in the plant. Another major difference between the two is that CBN is psychoactive, while CBD isn’t. Even though CBN is far less potent when compared to Delta 9 THC, people who don’t want any psychoactive effects for whatever reason will want to choose CBD products over CBN ones.

Besides the difference in psychoactivity, CBD is far more researched than CBN. Due to the difference in research, claims about CBD’s effects are usually supported by peer-reviewed research articles and case studies, while CBN’s effects are supported by anecdotal reports or preclinical studies. Additionally, since CBN products are fairly new, you’re far more likely to see CBD products being sold in stores and online.

Is CBN Legal in North Carolina?

The 2018 Farm Bill made several cannabis products legal as long as they contained less than 0.3% THC on a dry-weight basis. Due to this bill, CBN is legal to buy on a federal level and is also legal in North Carolina. However, since legislation about cannabinoid products is ongoing, it’s important to always check with your local, state, and federal laws before purchasing CBN products, such as CBN edibles or CBN tinctures.

What Are the Effects of CBN? Potential Benefits of CBN

CBN is relatively understudied, so it’s hard to make definitive claims about its benefits or effects. However, based on current research about the cannabinoid, CBN could have some potential benefits, such as helping with muscle relaxation or sleep. Learn more about the top five possible effects of CBN below:

  • Possible sleep aid: Anecdotal reports from some CBN users point to CBN’s potential as a sleep aid. However, a 2021 review of the current research found there’s currently not enough scientific evidence for or against its use as a sleep aid, meaning you’ll have to see for yourself if CBN helps you fall asleep. Some also believe that combining CBD and CBN enhances its sleep-inducing effects, so you may want to try a product that contains both cannabinoids for maximum results.
  • Potential muscle relaxation and pain management: In one 2019 study, researchers found that CBN reduced muscle sensitization in rats. Due to this finding, the researchers believe CBN could potentially be used for pain relief associated with chronic muscle pain disorders, such as fibromyalgia or temporomandibular disorders.
  • Appetite stimulation: If you have trouble finishing your food or struggle to feel hungry, you might want to try CBN. Though research is limited, one 2012 study found that CBN increased the food consumption and the feeding times of rats. Research into humans is still limited, but the study does indicate that CBN could be a great way to increase your appetite without getting stoned on Delta 9 THC
  • Therapeutic potential for treating glaucoma: CBN may be able to help treat the effects and symptoms of glaucoma. For example, one study demonstrated that CBN normalizes IOP levels in the eyes, promotes neuroprotection, and suppresses changes in ECM protein. These results suggest that CBN could have therapeutic potential when treating glaucoma.
  • Epidermolysis bullosa treatment: Those with epidermolysis bullosa (EB) may benefit from CBN. Early research shows that CBN cream could assist with managing EB symptoms, as CBN has demonstrated activity in lowering markers of pain and inflammation. CBN cream may also assist with reducing blister formation and improving skin integrity in EB simplex patients who have mutations of keratin 14. Additionally, researchers suggest that CBN anti-inflammatory features may help heal chronic wounds when these wounds haven’t been able to heal fully due to prolonged inflammation.

How Do You Take CBN?

If you’re interested in trying CBN, you can find plenty of ways to consume it. From CBN isolates and CBN edibles to CBN tinctures and CBN distillates, there are several ways to take CBN. Typically, CBN edibles and CBN tinctures are great if you want a quick way to take the cannabinoid. Those who enjoy making edibles or other cannabis-infused products on their own will likely prefer CBN distillates and isolates, as they can be added to various DIY recipes.

What Are the Potential Risks and Side Effects of CBN?

While there isn’t a lot of research into the potential side effects of CBN, the available research suggests you could feel drowsy or receive a positive result on a drug test. Learn more about these potential risks below:

  • Positive drug test results: If you work somewhere that requires drug tests or you have to take them for any other reason, you may need to avoid CBN. As CBN is derived from THC, some THC metabolites could be present, leading to a positive drug test for THC. Some CBN products may also contain small amounts of THC that could be detected, as one study found that CBN showed an additive effect with THC metabolites. This additive effect could increase the chances you test positive for THC.
  • Drowsiness: Since some research supports the claim CBN can help as a sleep aid, you could potentially feel sleepy or sedated after taking CBN. This risk of drowsiness isn’t something you’ll need to worry about if you’re taking CBN at night before bed. However, you shouldn’t drive after taking CBN, and you may want to avoid consuming it during the day.

Where Can You Purchase CBN?

Currently, CBN products can be found online and on store shelves. Typically, those carrying it will be cannabis or hemp-based businesses that like to give their customers a wide variety of products.

Though you can find CBN products at various stores, it’s important to do some research before you decide to purchase them. A good best practice when buying CBN products is to ensure the product has a certificate of analysis (COA) from a third-party testing lab. COAs should include details about the levels of CBN and other cannabinoids in the products. They’ll also include information about any pesticides, mold, or heavy metals contained in it. Any trustworthy business will include COAs with all their products to showcase their quality.
