What is Delta 8?

CBD, CBN, Delta-8, CBG, gummies, tinctures, topicals – if you’re looking for hemp products, there are dozens of different products, brands, and forms to choose from! One product that has recently emerged on the market and is growing in popularity is Delta-8 THC, but what is it?

Delta-8 THC (D8) is derived from the hemp plant and is extremely similar to Delta-9 THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. D8, short for delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol and Delta-9, short for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, are sister compounds, both found in cannabis, so what is the difference?

Both compounds have double bonds in their structures, but the location of the bonds (on the eight carbon versus the ninth) is what separates them. D8 is derived from the hemp plant, which is legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, making D8 a legal product.

Will Delta-8 get you high?

Yes, Delta-8 creates similar psychoactive effects as regular Delta-9. D8 and D9 have similar chemical structures: the double bond. Both compounds bind to the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is what produces that “high” effect. It’s thought that the double bond is what causes the feeling of being high. While you will get high from D8, the effects are known to be more mild and smooth, and there may not be as much anxiety or paranoia as some users of THC can experience.

Best Ways to Enjoy Delta-8

Just like CBD and other hemp-derived products, there are a plethora of ways to consume Delta-8, including capsules, gummies, tinctures, vaping oil, and flower. Which method is best depends on your personal preference, and there are pros and cons to each method. Capsules and tinctures are popular methods as you simply swallow the capsule or apply a few drops of tincture below the tongue. Tincture, however, comes with a certain earthy, grassy flavor that not everyone enjoys. Gummies are convenient and are typically available in fun flavors.

How to Dose Delta-8

Just like which method you choose will depend on personal preference, how to dose D8 will depend on a variety of factors, such as if you have used cannabinoids before, which form you are consuming, and your desired effects. It’s generally recommended that you start with a low dose, wait an hour or two, and reassess to determine if you want to take more or not.

The potency of the product is something you should be aware of as well. A single dose may contain anywhere from 5mg to 150mg. For beginning users, start with a lower dose, while more advanced users can start with a higher dose.

If you’re shopping for hemp products, want to try something new, or want the psychoactive effects of a hemp-derived product, D8 may be the product for you.
